New Co-op Social Supermarket Opens in Stonehouse to Support Local Families

A brand-new co-op social supermarket has officially opened its doors in Stonehouse, offering affordable food, essential household goods, and vital community support to local residents.

The supermarket operates as a co-operative, meaning it is led and owned by its members, with a clear focus on dignity, connection, and supporting people through the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Membership is open to anyone living in postcode areas: PL1 3 & PL1 5, with a small annual fee and straightforward sign-up process.

The supermarket offers high-quality products at significantly reduced prices, as well as information and signposting to local services and support. But more than that, it aims to be a welcoming space where local people can come together, find support, and feel part of something.

Cllr Tudor Evans OBE, Leader of Plymouth City Council, which has provided funding towards this project said, “I’ve been involved with Millfields Trust since it began and have been pleased to provide support from the council at key points in its development. To be able to open the social supermarket which will make so much difference to Stonehouse residents lives is a real privilege and I look forward to hearing about it’s ongoing success.”

At the heart of the project is Mohammed Chaanda, Social Supermarket Coordinator.

“I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Social Supermarket project, which is all about supporting the community—especially the people of Stonehouse. Being the Coordinator puts me right at the heart of this work, and it means so much to know that we’re helping families through difficult times and bringing some relief from the pressure of rising living costs.

“This project isn’t just about food—it’s about connection, dignity, and creating a welcoming space for everyone. I want to invite everyone in the Stonehouse neighbourhood to come and register as members. This is your space, and together we can make the Social Supermarket a true hub of community support and opportunity.”

Early feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive:

“Beautiful products, kind helpful people, very helpfully low prices.”“The Social Supermarket is a fantastic idea. It gives us a chance to get those treats that make life just a little bit better without breaking the bank.”

The project is supported in part by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, distributed by Plymouth City Council, to support community-led responses to cost-of-living challenges. It has also received additional support from Plymouth City Council through the Household Support Fund, along with generous donations from the Millfields Trust. The project has been developed by a network of local partners committed to community-led solutions and creating long-term impact in Stonehouse.
